Original Column: Sustenance Secret #1

Dear Doug,

Your tips have helped me so much with getting results from my exercises. I especially feel the difference when I lower weight super slowly during strength training. In addition to toning up, I am also interested in shaping up… my diet! I would love to hear your thoughts about nutrition and weight loss. Thank you so much for your help.

Aloha Marie,

Congrats on doing what it takes to tone up and shape up in the new year. Along with Strength, Stamina, and Stretching, incorporating proper principles for Sustenance is also crucial. I have three primary dietary tenets which work miraculously for nearly everybody and every body. My system for “Super Sustenance” is:

SMART… because its structure is scientifically sound.

SIMPLE… because it’s based on general dietary principles, not one specific dietary protocol.

SPEEDY… because its design supports snacking versus meals, and natural foods requiring minimal preparation.

SAFE… because it’s focused on nourishment and quality of nutrients, rather than constraints and quantity of calories.

My Super 7 System of Sustenance adopts the perspective of eating to live, not living to eat.

Since most of us either want to lose weight or keep our already-controlled weight in check, I think that this is a great time for a broad-brushed overview. People are always amazed at just how quickly they shape up and slim down by following only three super-simple, yet semi-strict, secrets to Sustenance. I consider this to be one of the healthiest and most-realistic methods to lose weight rapidly and burn fat permanently.

My system for Sustenance should not be viewed as a diet, per say. I do not purport it to be. But, this system of eating works to burn body fat for anyone willing to work it. By “work it,” I mean give it your absolute best effort. Super Sustenance “selectivity” probably won’t cut the mustard. In other words, you can’t choose to adhere to only the parts that you like.

I’m certainly not perfect in my eating habits, and I don’t often have a 100% perfect day. Each morning I begin anew, doing my best to follow these three simple guidelines for the duration. This should hopefully encourage you by the fact that, even at a level that is less than optimal, this program still works… for me, for countless others, and hopefully now for you too. Please keep in mind that proper nutrition can be quite specific to each individual. As always, if you have any specific medical, dietary, allergy, or metabolic conditions which necessitate monitoring, check with your doctor or health care professional before making any significant changes to your diet or exercise program.

My #1 super simple secret solution to Super Sustenance is… FRUIT FIRST!! Eating fresh, raw fruit in its most natural form is the best way to start each day. Let’s take a quick look at why fruit… and why first?

  1. Fruit makes the perfect pre-packaged meal. It is convenient and easy to carry anywhere.
  2. Fruit First, in effect, guarantees that you will include it as part of your regular daily consumption.
  3. Fruit is abundant in Sustenance… packed full of energy, enzymes, nutrients, fiber, and healthy hydration.
  4. Fruit First, as the initial meal at the beginning of each day, works in tandem with your body’s natural elimination cycles.
  5. Fruit is basically “pre-digested,” allowing appropriate absorption and assimilation of both macronutrients and micronutrients.
  6. Fruit First is easy on your system, so that your body is not overwhelmed with the task of energy- draining digestion early in the day.
  7. Fruit is the most natural source of simple carbohydrates available, moderated by fiber and diluted in water, essentially the single-most perfectly packaged energy food.

I always suggest eating fruit in its whole, raw, and most natural form… one piece or type at a time. You can essentially have as much as you want, as often as you want, for the first few hours of each day. I prefer to have a specific type each hour or two, depending on my cravings at the time. For most people, even having three different pieces of fruit each morning (such as berries at 7, melons at 9, and citrus at 11) will completely overhaul their entire daily dietary patterns for the better.

Eating fruit will make you feel absolutely incredible in just a few days. Eating fruit first will help keep you on the straight and narrow throughout the remainder of each day.

Because fruit does not mix well with other foods (which take much longer to digest), I suggest always eating fruit separately to help avoid fermentation and putrification. I never eat fruit with other foods and I never ever eat it on top of other foods, as a dessert.

Fruit first gets you off to a great start. I’ll be back in two weeks with The #2 Super Secret to Sustenance: VEGGIES!!

Core dietary principles for older adults

As we navigate our golden years, foundational dietary principles for older adults should prioritize gentle digestion and high-quality nourishment over rigid calorie counting. Your digestive tract naturally slows over time, which means heavy, processed breakfast options can leave you feeling fatigued before your day even gets going.

By focusing on raw, living foods in their most basic form early in the morning, you allow your body to absorb essential vitamins and minerals without draining your energy reserves on complex digestion. Here are a few practical habits to adopt this week:

Remember to always move at a pace that feels comfortable for your unique body. If you ever experience stomach pain, digestive upset, or unusual fatigue, pause and consult your primary care doctor to tailor these guidelines to your specific health history.

Pairing a healthy eating and workout routine

Combining a healthy eating and workout routine requires balancing proper fuel with gentle physical activity. When you fill your body with simple, water-rich fruit during the morning, you supply your muscles with readily available energy without straining your stomach during movement.

This light, clean nourishment makes it much easier to step into light strength training or balance practice without feeling heavy or sluggish. When practicing your physical movements, keep these safety tips in mind:

A consistent, gentle morning routine builds both inner stamina and physical confidence. If you take medications for blood pressure or blood sugar, coordinate with your physician to ensure your movement and eating times align safely with your prescriptions.

Safe nutrition for senior weight loss

Exploring nutrition for senior weight loss should always focus on adding vibrant, nutrient-dense foods rather than severe restriction or harsh fasting. Crash diets and extreme calorie limits can lead to muscle loss and joint weakness, which is the last thing we want as we age.

Instead, using whole fruit as your primary morning food naturally fills you up with soluble fiber and natural water content. This gentle approach helps manage weight steadily while supporting your body's strength and natural elimination cycles. Consider these supportive steps for sustainable progress:

Weight management in your sixties, seventies, eighties, and beyond is about feeling strong, vibrant, and capable. If you have underlying metabolic conditions or diabetes, always work alongside your medical provider before adjusting your daily carbohydrate intake.

FAQ: Questions I Get Asked Most

Why is starting the morning with whole fruit recommended?

Starting your day with fruit provides natural hydration, easy-to-digest energy, and vital enzymes. Among the top healthy nutrition tips for seniors, eating whole fruit first gives your body gentle nourishment without overwhelming your digestive system early in the day.

Can I eat different types of fruit together in the morning?

I recommend enjoying one type of raw fruit at a time throughout the morning. Digestion stays simple and easy when you space different fruits an hour or two apart, such as berries early on followed later by citrus, helping prevent stomach discomfort.

Should I consult a doctor before changing my eating routine?

Yes, always talk with your healthcare provider or dietitian before making significant changes to your diet. This is especially important if you manage conditions like diabetes, blood sugar fluctuations, or specific metabolic health concerns.

How does morning fruit support daily energy for exercise?

Whole fruit delivers simple carbohydrates wrapped in natural fiber and pure water. This combination gives your muscles clean fuel for gentle morning movement without leaving a heavy feeling in your stomach that might cause sluggishness or discomfort.
